Tigers Open AAC Play at Temple
Dec 29, 2022 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA, Penn. – The Memphis Tiger women's basketball team will hit the road before the new year to open American Athletic Conference play at Temple University this Friday afternoon.
Memphis (8-5) extended their winning streak after earning a 66-63 win over Xavier last Wednesday. After trailing for more than 30 minutes of the game, the Tigers offense would ignite in the second half to take the lead with less than a minute left in the game.
Along with Jamirah Shutes who led the team with 17 points, Madison Griggs etched her name in the record books once again as she broke the program's career three-point field goal record in the second quarter of the game. Griggs would go on to pour in 12 points in the team's victory.
Shutes and Griggs lead the team with a combined 28 points per game while the duo is shooting near 40% from the field. On the boards, Hannah Riddick and Emani Jefferson have led the Tigers with 5.7 and 5.1 rebounds per contest.
Temple (5-7), who opened the season with a 1-4 record, has seen a great turnaround, winning three of their last five match-ups. Most recently, the Owls dropped a 20-point decision to Ole Miss where the Rebels held Temple to just nine points in the opening quarter.
For the season, Aleah Nelson leads the team with 15.4 points per game while Jasha Clinton and Tiarra East are pouring in nearly 23 points per game, combined. East is also grabbing a team-best 6.5 rebounds per game.
Last season when Memphis and Temple met, the Tigers put together a 23-point quarter to come away with the 64-61 win. Griggs led the team with 18 points while going 4-6 from long range and 7-10 from the field. Along with Griggs, Jamirah Shutes added in 17 points and a team-high five rebounds.
Friday's game is scheduled to tip-off at 1 p.m. CT with coverage available on ESPN+ and on 98.9 FM THE ROAR THE MEMPHIS with Tyler Springs on the call.
