
Tigers Fall to Owls in AAC Opener

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. – In their final game of 2022, the Memphis Tiger women's basketball team made the trip up north to take on the Owls of Temple University. Despite an early lead, the Temple offense would explode, and the Tigers suffered the 80-69 loss.
Following today's game, Memphis moves to 8-6 overall and 0-1 in American Athletic Conference play.
The Tigers got out to an early lead today, getting back-to-back three-pointers from Emani Jefferson and Jamirah Shutes to take the 17-9 lead with just over three minutes left in the opening quarter. Temple continued to chip away at the Memphis lead, but another three from Madison Griggs would give the Tigers the 23-15 lead heading into the second quarter.
Temple would come out hot in the second quarter, netting 30 points to take their first lead of the game. The Tigers would face the 45-34 deficit heading into the halftime break.
Memphis continued to struggle into the third quarter; the Temple offense would ignite behind nine quick points from Aleah Nelson. The Tigers would face a deficit as much as 21 in the quarter before facing the 68-50 score heading into the final 10 minutes.
Despite the Tigers finding a good offensive rhythm in the fourth quarter, the Temple lead proved to be too much as they went on to hand Memphis the 80-69 loss.
Madison Griggs shined for the Tigers today with 20 points while going 7-14 from the field and 4-8 from long range. Along with Griggs, Destiny Thomas dominated in the post for 10 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Tanyuel Welch was also all over the boards with a game-high 11 rebounds and five assists.
As a team, Memphis out-rebounded Temple 48-39 while shooting 34% from the field and pouring in seven three-pointers.
