MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tiger women's basketball team will face their biggest test of the season when they travel to Columbia, S.C. to take on the reigning National Champions and current No. 1 ranked South Carolina on Saturday afternoon.
Memphis (4-3) is coming off the Las Vegas Invitational where they faced off with then #6 Indiana in their final game of the weekend. Despite coming out of the first quarter with a six-point lead, the Hoosier offense would be hard to contain as they handed the Tigers the 79-64 loss.
Jamirah Shutes and Emani Jefferson led the way for the Tigers over the weekend with a combined 22.5 points per game. Jefferson along with Hannah Riddick cleaned up on the board for Memphis with Riddick grabbing a team-best 10 rebounds against Indiana with seven of them coming on the offensive end.
For the season, Shutes and Madison Griggs lead the team, offensively, with 15.6 and 13.4 points per game, respectively, while Jefferson is not far behind them with just over nine points and nearly three assists per contest.
South Carolina (7-0) is coming off their third top-25 win of the season and their 17th straight after scraping by #15 UCLA for their 29thconsecutive home win
Aliyah Boston led the team with 18 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks while Kamilla Cardoso came off the bench for a 16-point performance while grabbing nine rebounds and blocking five shots. As a team, the Gamecocks blocked 15 of the Bruins shots while shooting 50% from the field in the second half.
For the season, Boston and Zia Cooke are leading the team with a combined 26 points per game while Boston and Cardoso are grabbing 9.6 and 7.2 rebounds per game, respectively.
The Tigers and Gamecocks have not played against one another in nearly three decades after playing against each other at least one a year from 1981-93. Memphis and South Carolina, who use to be part of the old Metro Conference, last played against each other back in the 1992-93 season where S.C. took the 73-68 overtime win here in Memphis.
Saturday's game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. CT tip-off with coverage available on SEC Network+ and on 98.9 THE ROAR OF MEMPHIS with Tyler Springs on the call.
