#4 Tigers Take on #6 SMU in AAC Championship Finals
Nov 05, 2022 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In an upset that stunned the conference, the Memphis Tiger women's soccer team will play in their second consecutive AAC Championship match when they take on #6 SMU on Sunday afternoon.
Memphis (8-5-5) is coming off a draw with #1 UCF that saw Lilly Huber net the equalizer goal in the 62' off an assist from Peyton Felton. After 110 minutes of play and the match still tied 1-1, the Tigers and Knights headed to penalty kicks.
Momo Nakao, Eef Kerkhof, Lilly Huber, Anne-Valerie Seto and Mya Jones all connected with the back of the net while Zoe May, who didn't play during regulation or overtime, stepped up and secured the Tiger's ticket to Sunday when she got her shot past UCF goalkeeper, Caroline DeLisle, for the 6-5 advantage.
Claire Wyville had a night after making two saves during regulation – including a diving stop in the beginning of the second half to keep the Tigers within one.
SMU (10-3-5) picked up their fourth consecutive win after they shocked USF with a 5-0 shutout in the semi-finals of the AAC Championship. The Mustangs would take a 3-0 lead into halftime after Sammy Nieves (2) and Wayny Balata scored all three goals in the opening 25 minutes of the match.
The Tigers and Mustangs are no stranger to one another; Memphis ended the regular season in Dallas last week where they were looking at a 1-1 draw with SMU. But, with 15 seconds left in the match, SMU would get the game-winning goal from Julissa Cisneros to hand the Tigers the 2-1 loss.
Historically, Memphis has seen great success over SMU, holding the all-time record over them 13-3-3 with the Tigers taking four of the last five matchups.
Sunday's Championship match is scheduled to kick-off at 12 p.m. CT with coverage available on ESPNEWS.
