Tigers Fast Start Not Enough to Down No. 6 Indiana

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Tigers got out to a fast start in their final game in the Las Vegas Invitational. But, Memphis would be unable to hold the offense of No. 6-ranked Indiana down as they suffered the 79-64 loss.
Following tonight's game, Memphis moves to 4-3 for the season.
After opening the game trading baskets with the Hoosiers, Memphis would take the early 9-6 lead after Madison Griggs drained a three-pointer from the near wing. While Indiana would get back-to-back buckets, the Tigers would answer right back with a putback lay-up from Destiny Thomas and consecutive three-pointers from Tanyuel Welch and Shelbee Brown to keep their lead.
The Tigers would extend their lead just before the end of the quarter when Lanetta Williams laid in a second chance bucket and Jamirah Shutes sank two free throws for the 21-15 lead heading into the second frame.
Memphis would take their largest lead of the night after Lanetta Williams made a hook shoot in the lane to open play in the second quarter.
Indiana would respond back with a 10-0 run to put the Tigers down 25-23 with eight minutes left in the half.
IU and Memphis would go shot-for-shot throughout the second quarter before the Hoosiers strung together their second 10-0 run of the quarter to extend their lead out to 12 with 2:35 remaining in the half. The Tigers would take that deficit into the break.
The Hoosiers would extend their lead out to as much as 16 in the third quarter before Memphis would chip away. Jamirah Shutes would score seven consecutive points for the Tigers late in the quarter to cut Indiana's lead to 57-48. Three free throws from IU would make it a 12-point game heading into the final 10 minutes of play.
While Memphis did everything, they could get back within reaching distance of the Hoosiers, the Tigers would not be able to stage a late game come back and faced the 79-64 loss.
Shutes led the team with 15 points while Jada Wright added in nine points. Hannah Riddick had herself a day on the boards, leading all players with 10 rebounds, seven of which came on the offensive end.
As a team, Memphis shot 34% from the field and won the battle on the boards 40-33 and holding Indiana to below their yearly average.
The Tigers will have a week to rest before they make the trip out to Columbia, S.C. to take on the reigning National Champions, South Carolina. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT with coverage of the game available on SEC Network +.
