Under the direction of third-year head coach Bartow, the 1972-73 Memphis State men's basketball team made a historic run through March that saw the Tigers knock off South Carolina, Kansas State and Providence en route to a national runner-up finish. The season ultimately came to an end in the championship final as John Wooden and his top-ranked UCLA Bruins took home their seventh-consecutive trophy with an 87-66 victory over the Tigers.
That season marked the fourth time the Tigers had reached the NCAA Tournament and their first in 11 years. Finch led Memphis in scoring with 24.0 points per game, while Kenon chipped in 20.1 points and 16.7 rebounds each time out. Robinson also averaged a double-double behind 13.5 points and 11.2 rebounds per game. After opening the season with three losses in their first five games, the Tigers reeled off 14-straight victories and went 22-3 in their final 25 games.
