MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After helping the University of Memphis football team take down Nicholls, 42-17, on Saturday at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, kicker Joe Doyle and running back Brandon Thomas earned weekly American Athletic Conference (AAC) honors on Monday, the league office announced.
Doyle was named the AAC Special Teams Player of the Week for the first time in his career, while Thomas was named to the AAC Honor Roll.
In the victory over Nicholls, Doyle was a perfect 5-for-5 in field goals and 3-for-3 on extra point attempts. Impressive, especially considering Saturday's contest was the first time that the redshirt junior had ever attempted a field goal in his collegiate career.
Doyle finished the game with 18 points, the most for a Memphis kicker since Riley Patterson (21) since the Cotton Bowl against Penn State on Dec. 28, 2019.
Thomas made the most of his first collegiate start, rushing for a game-high 147 rushing yards on 16 carries to go with one touchdown. The 100-yard rushing performance was the first of his career.
In 2020, the redshirt freshman appeared in four games, rushing the ball twice for a total of eight yards.
The Tigers return to the field on Saturday, Sept. 11 when the team heads to Jonesboro, Ark. to face Arkansas State. The game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. CT kickoff and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
