Sep 15, 2021 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Head coach Brooks Monaghan and crew look to bounce back this week for their opening American Athletic Conference match following Sunday's 2-0 loss to Drake. The Tigers will play host to the Owls of Temple University this Thursday night.
The Tigers outshot the Bulldogs 29-4 in the match and put serious pressure on Drake goalkeeper, Kelsie Stone. Memphis sent 10 of their shots to Stone who was able to stop all of them.
Despite the loss, the Tigers (6-1-1) have had a note-worthy season; Memphis has outscored their opponents 19-4 over an eight-game spread and held teams to a combined 15 corner kicks while recording 70 as a team.
On top of their electric offense, the Tiger defense has been solid to start the 2021 season. In eight matches, teams have been held to an average of five shots/game and are averaging less than a goal per game.
Tanya Boychuk leads the team with four goals and eight points currently while Aubrey Mister has had a breakout rookie season with a team second best seven points off three goals and one assist. Saorla Miller has also been a big factor for the Tigers with three goals while both Jocelyn Alonzo and Lara Kazandjian have recorded two goals and an assist. Five other Memphis players have all recorded at least one goal.
Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg has had a stellar start to her final season; Moberg has recorded three solo shutouts to put her within two of the program record while making 13 saves to pick up six wins and put her just six wins behind current leader, Elise Kuhar-Pitters.
Memphis will host Temple (1-2-3) in their AAC opener this Thursday. The Owls have started the season a bit rocky; after opening the season 0-2-3, they managed to pick up their first win of the season with a 3-0 shutout over Saint Joseph's last week.
Emily Kavanaugh leads the Owls offense this season with two goals while three other players have all scored one goal. Of the five goals that have been scored by Temple this season, Lexy Endres have assisted on three of them.
Kamryn Stablein has been the go-to for the Owls this season with just under 500 minutes played in goal. Stablein has recorded 32 saves and one shutout coming into Thursday's contest.
