MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Three Memphis Tigers earned American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis All-Conference honors as the team prepares for NCAA Tournament play Saturday.
Tigers David Stevenson and James Story picked up all-conference singles recognition, and Memphis' doubles team of Stevenson/Oscar Cutting was on the all-conference doubles squad.
Story, ranked the 58th-best singles player in the nation, went 7-6 in dual matches this season including wins over No. 62 Tim Sandkaulen of Ole Miss and No. 72 Alex Reco of Arkansas. Stevenson is ranked 102nd in the nation and was 8-8 in dual matches this regular season.
Stevenson/Cutting is the 18th-best doubles tandem in the nation and was 9-6 this year.
The Tigers earned an at-large bid to the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship and will take on Georgia Tech Saturday at 9 a.m. CT in Knoxville, Tenn.
The 35th-ranked Tigers (9-8) are making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2018 and seventh in the last nine years. The 2020 tournament was not held due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Georgia Tech (13-9) is currently ranked 30th in the nation. With a win, Memphis would advance to play either No. 3 national seed Tennessee or Alabama A&M on Sunday at noon CT.
First- and second-round competition takes place this week and features four teams playing in a single-elimination format. The winner of each site advances to the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla., where the 16 remaining teams will compete for the national championship May 17-28.
