Brooks and Goodman homer, Tigers swept in doubleheader by Tulane
Apr 23, 2021 | Baseball
In the first half of the twin-bill, Blake Wimberley (L, 2-6) worked around two baserunners in the opening frame for the Tigers and kept the game scoreless before the Green Wave offense sent nine men to the plate in a three-run third inning. Four consecutive Tulane hitters reached base with one out in the frame, as an RBI single from Bennett Lee gave the Green Wave a 1-0 lead, while RBIs from Chase Engelhard and Walker Burchfield made it 3-0 Tulane after 2.5 innings.
AAC Pre-Season Pitcher of the Year Braden Olthoff (W, 4-1) wasn't as dominant as he'd been in previous starts, but still kept the Memphis offense in check over seven innings. Goodman doubled to lead off the fourth for the Tigers, the third double in as many frames for Memphis, and he later scored on a throwing error by Trevor Minder. Goodman followed with a one out home run in the sixth inning, which proved to be the final run of the game for the Tigers. Memphis (12-24, 2-12) went 0-13 with runners in scoring position and left five runners at second or third base in the loss.
Tulane (19-13, 9-1) added a run in the fourth and fifth with leadoff home runs from Collin Burns and Engelhard respectively, as Wimberley gave up five runs on 10 hits over seven innings. The Green Wave led 5-2 after seven innings but blew the game open against Daniel Casto and Reed Harding over the final two frames. Tulane struck for a pair in the eighth and sent 11 men to the plate in a six-run ninth, as the Green Wave took the series opener 13-2.
Game two of the doubleheader was competitive throughout, though the Tigers never led. Memphis got the tying run to the plate in the eighth and the winning run to the plate in the ninth, but both times, the Tulane bullpen stranded two runners on base.
Just three batters into the back half of the doubleheader, Tulane had the lead. Jacob LaPrairie tallied a one-out double off of Carson Stinnett (L, 2-3), while Lee followed with an RBI single that gave the Green Wave a 1-0 lead. Stinnett settled in after that and didn't allow another run until the fifth. The Memphis starter allowed four runs on seven hits over six innings.
Memphis leveled the game at 1-1 in the third inning, as Brooks led off the frame with a home run off of Jack Aldrich (W, 4-1). After Brook's game-tying home run, Aldrich held Memphis hitless over the next four innings. Evan Bell snapped the hitless stretch with a one-out single in the seventh but was quickly doubled up one batter later.
The Green Wave once again used the long ball in the middle portion of the game, as Burns led off the fifth with a home run, and Luis Aviles did the same in the sixth. Two batters after Aviles' home run, Haydan Hastings made it five home runs across the doubleheader for Tulane with a solo blast of his own. The Green Wave led 4-1 after six innings.
Aldrich, who struck out 10 and gave up just two hits in the win, pitched through the seventh for Tulane. Trent Johnson worked around a pair of singles and stranded runners at the corners in the eighth, but then retired just one of the four batters that he faced in the ninth. Bell drew a HBP, Ian Bibiloni singled, while Brooks picked up his second RBI of the game with a single that plated Bell and brought the potential winning run to the plate. Tulane went back to the bullpen, as Zach DeVito (SV, 5) entered and struck out Nick Jones on four pitches. DeVito wrapped up Tulane's 4-2 win, as he got Braden Webb to pop out to end the game.
The Green Wave have now won eight straight games overall, which includes five straight over the Tigers. Memphis needs victories both Saturday and Sunday to avoid dropping its fourth consecutive conference series and fifth straight weekend series overall. Saturday, Jackson Cothren (1-5, 6.98) is set to start for the Tigers. Cothren allowed five runs over 2.1 innings earlier this month against the Green Wave. For Tulane, Donovan Benoit (2-1, 5.23) is scheduled to pitch for the series victory. Benoit allowed one earned run over seven frames in a victory over the Tigers on April 2. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. at FedExPark, while the series will conclude with a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday. Both games will be available on ESPN+.
