MEMPHIS — Memphis Football's David Glidden has been promoted to wide receivers coach and Brad Salem to tight ends coach, head coach Ryan Silverfield announced Thursday.
Glidden coached tight ends last season for the Tigers after spending the previous two years as a quality control analyst with the wide receivers. A 2015 Oklahoma State graduate, Glidden played four years for the Cowboys totaling 115 receptions for 1,655 yards and six touchdowns. He was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Mustang (Okla.) High School, before coming to Memphis in 2018.
"We are excited to announce that David Glidden, who is entering his fourth season on staff, is now coaching our wide receivers," said Silverfield. "He is dynamic coach and highly regarded amongst our players."
Salem, who was a senior offensive consultant at Memphis last season, spent 10 years at Michigan State from 2010-19 where he was the offensive coordinator in 2019. He also coached running backs for three years including three-time Pro Bowl selection Le'Veon Bell, and quarterbacks for six seasons for the Spartans. Michigan State went to nine bowl games and had six 10-win seasons during his tenure.
"We are pleased to elevate Brad Salem to our tight ends coaching position," said Silverfield. "Brad is a veteran coach who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience at a high level to our staff."
He also spent six seasons from 2011-16 as Michigan State's recruiting coordinator, helping put together four consecutive top 25 classes (2014: No. 19 Scout, No. 22 Rivals; 2015: No. 18 Scout; No. 22 Rivals; 2016: No. 18 Scout, No. 20 Rivals; 2017: No. 22 Scout).
Salem has been either an offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach for 13 seasons as a college assistant.
Salem was head coach at his alma mater, Div. II Augustana (S.D.) College, from 2005-09, where he went 31-26 overall. He led Augustana to back-to-back 8-4 records and consecutive trips to the Mineral Water Bowl in 2008-09. The eight wins matched the school single-season record.
Prior to being promoted to head coach, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach under Jim Heinitz, serving as quarterbacks coach in 2003 and offensive coordinator in 2004.
Salem coached the quarterbacks at O'Gorman High School in Sioux Falls, S.D., during the 2002 season. He spent three years as passing game and recruiting coordinator at South Dakota from 1999-2001 and two seasons as offensive and recruiting coordinator at Luther College from 1997-98 in Decorah, Iowa.
In 1996, Salem was defensive coordinator at Everett High School in Lansing, Mich. From 1994-95, he served as a graduate assistant under George Perles and Nick Saban at Michigan State, working with the quarterbacks and wide receivers.
A native of Sioux Falls, S.D., Salem began his coaching career in the European Professional League in Paris, France, where he was the offensive coordinator for Robinson Sphinx in the spring of 1993. That fall, he worked with the defensive backs as a student coach at Augustana.
Salem began his collegiate playing career as a quarterback at Northern Arizona in 1988-89 before transferring to Augustana where he played quarterback and wide receiver for Heinitz from 1990-92.
He earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Augustana in 1992 and his master's degree in athletic administration from Michigan State in 1996.
