Lackland collects career-high tying seven saves.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. –The University of Memphis battled American Athletic Conference leader Tulsa to a scoreless match through regulation and the first overtime session at the Billy J. Murphy Soccer/Track and Field Complex Sunday. However, the Golden Hurricane netted the golden goal 50 seconds into the second extra session for the win.
Â
The setback drops the Tigers to 1-6 overall and 1-6 in the league. Tulsa sits atop the AAC standings with a 4-1-1 league record (4-1-1 overall).
Â
Although the Golden Hurricane outshot Memphis 17-3, the defenses took center stage as both teams combined for only a handful of solid scoring opportunities.
Â
"It was a well-played game," said UofM head coach Richard Mulrooney. "Tulsa came in and played their game, and I thought we played better today than we did on Wednesday (at Tulsa).
Â
"They are a sound defensive team. They haven't given up a lot of goals this year. It was nice for us to have a shutout for 90 minutes and know we didn't give up two or three goals. We're moving in the right direction from our effort tonight."
Â
Memphis goalkeeper Parker Lackland made a career-high tying seven stops. Tulsa netminder Lucas Cline had one save.
Â
The Golden Hurricane got the game-winner just under a minute into the second extra 10-minute session. Ben Bryant played the ball down the left side of the field to Alex Meinhart, who dribbled into the box and pushed his 12 yard shot attempt to the back of the net.
Â
Tulsa had three scoring opportunities in the second half, but one shot went wide and two other attempts were saved. One of the saves came from midfielder Brandon Brackett, who cleared a point-blank Golden Hurricane attempt off the line.
Â
The UofM's best scoring chance came in the 77thminute when Jovan Prado's attempt was saved by Cline.
Â
"We created more this game, but we weren't able to finish that one chance," Mulrooney said. "They got that one goal, and that was enough. It was an evenly-played match. I'm disappointed, but I can live with those types of effort from our guys. Unfortunately, tonight we fell one short.
Â
"Right now, it seems things are not going our way, but you create your own luck. We need to get back to work on Tuesday. It's going in the right direction. I feel for our guys. They put in an honest work's effort, but someone had to win and we were on the wrong end of that."
Â
The Golden Hurricane held a 5-2 corner kick advantage in the match.
Â
Memphis returns to action Mar. 27 when it hosts Temple in an AAC match at the Murphy Soccer/Track and Field Complex. Match time is 6 p.m. (CT). The Tigers won at Temple in late February, a 2-1 overtime victory.
