Tigers Trek to Midwest for Matchups at No. 22 Ohio State, Butler

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis men's soccer team prepares for a short stretch away from home, first facing the No. 22 Ohio State Buckeyes on Friday, Aug. 28, before a Monday evening match at Butler on the 31st.
Friday's match at No. 22 Ohio State will be set for a 7 p.m. CT kick on Big Ten Network+, with Monday's contest at Butler kicking off at 5 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
Memphis (2-0-0) looks to ride momentum after securing a 3-2 win over RV North Carolina in a modified home opener, with Eben McIntyre, Renan Syrio and Carson Banham finding the back of the net on Monday.
Leading the way in point production is Renan Syrio, who scored in his Memphis debut at Belmont and added another goal and an assist against North Carolina. Not far behind is Eben McIntyre, who sits with a goal and an assist after a win over the Tar Heels for his third multi-point performance as a Tiger. Substitutes have also been key for Memphis early on, with Carson Banham, Thomas Mancuso and Kynu Samuels all recording a point without a start.
In the early stages of the season, the Tigers have rolled out the same starting 11 in both matches, with midfielder Henrique Cruz, defender Marko Stajnko and goalkeeper Noah Kasin being the only three to play all 180 minutes. All of Memphis' 11 starters have logged at least 100 minutes this season.
Junior goalkeeper Noah Kasin sits at a perfect 2-0-0 on the season, also recording his first saves in net for the Tigers with four against the Tar Heels. On the season, he sits at a 1.00 goals-against-average and holds a 66.7 save percentage.
SCOUTING THE NO. 22 BUCKEYES
No. 22 Ohio State (2-0-0), like Memphis, enters the matchup unbeaten, having secured a 1-0 win over Virginia Tech and putting up six goals against DePaul. Both contests have been played at home as the Buckeyes do not have a road match until Sept. 8.
Kentucky transfer Isaiah Chisolm leads in production early on with three goals, including the eventual game winner against Virginia Tech. Five Buckeyes (Isaiah Chisolm, Jack Wayne, Ryan Hannosh, Nyle Waugh, Martin Wurschmidt) have found the back of the net so far, with Wurschmidt being notable as the 2025 Missouri Valley Conference Defender of the Year scoring against the Tigers in a 1-1 draw last season while playing at Evansville. Wurschmidt and Chisolm, along with midfielder Andre Roberts, were all named to the 2026 Big Ten Players to Watch list.
In net, senior Patrick McLaughlin has not been pressured en route to logging a pair of clean sheets this season, only recording three saves, matching his season total from 2025 in one match played.

Butler (0-1-1) currently sits winless on the year with a matchup at No. 14 Indiana before hosting the Tigers. Through two matches, the Bulldogs have fallen to Northern Illinois and drawn against Bradley.
Though goalless through two matches, the Bulldogs are currently outpacing their opponents in shots (19-15) and shots on goal (7-3), but their opponents have scored on two of three shots on goal this season. Leading in shots with seven, is redshirt sophomore Brendan Cunningham, who had two goals and two assists last season in his first collegiate action.
Redshirt junior Brooks Boersma holds a 33.3 save percentage on 15 shots faced in his first two collegiate appearances after not appearing in his first three years at Butler. His lone save and clean sheet on the season came in Butler's most recent outing, a scoreless draw against Bradley on Aug. 23.

This Friday marks just the third all-time meeting between the Tigers and the Buckeyes, previously facing off in 2004 and 2021. That most recent matchup in 2021 saw a pair of first-half penalty conversions to preserve a tie before Ohio State was able to edge out a 3-2 result in the season opener.
