Tigers edged out at No. 12 Florida St. 3-2: Fall to No. 24 Missouri

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Memphis softball lost a pair on day two of the JoAnne Graf Classic with losses to No.12 Florida State 3-2 and No.24 Missouri 12-2
No. 12 FLORIDA STATE 3, MEMPHIS 2
In the first game against No. 12 Florida State the Tigers got off to a strong start. Kendall Lee scored on a Sara Ann Davidson double to center to give the Tigers their first lead of the season at 1-0 in the second. They kept it going in the third as Gracie Morton hit a rocket of a double to right center to score Sam Ibison extending the lead to 2-0.
Sophomore Chyanne Ellett got her second start of the weekend. Ellett only give up three hits through 4.1 innings.
Seminoles pitcher Caylan Arnold entered the game in the fourth with two Tigers on base and no outs, and was able to silence the Tigers bats to get out of the inning. Arnold then slowed down the Tigers again with a 1, 2, 3 inning in the fifth.
Tigers faced some trouble in the fourth as Devyn Flaherty was able to avoid a tag from 1B Kendall Lee for an infield single with two out and runners on at third and second to get the Seminoles on the board. Ellett was able to get out of the inning without any more damage as she got Sydney Sherrill to fly out to short to end the inning up 2-1.
Ellett gave up back-to-back homeruns to Cassidy Davis and Elizabeth Mason to give FSU a 3-2 lead. Freshman Olivia Johnson took over in the circle to make her first appearance for the Tigers as she was able stop the bleeding and get out of the inning. Johnson then retired the side in the sixth with two strikeouts.
Arnold was able to keep the Tigers bats quiet by not allowing a hit in 3.2 innings to get the 3-2 win for Florida State. The Seminoles are 3-1 on the season.
No. 24 MISSOURI 12, MEMPHIS 2
Freshman pitcher Hallie Siems made her first start of the season in the circle as she threw 1.2 innings with three hits, two runs and three walks on 41 pitches. Olivia Johnson, Kailey Hillderbrand and Mariah Nichols also saw time in the circle.
Mizzou got off to a good start in the first as senior Brook Wilmes scored on a double to left center from Kimberly Wert to take an early lead, 1-0. Mizzou kept it going in the second with a double from Jenna Laird to left center to score Alex Honnold from second to lead 2-0. The top of the second did have a pair of great defensive plays by sophomore catcher Meagan Chism, who threw out a runner stealing second and a behind the runner pickoff throw to third.
Mizzou added nine more in the third inning including a three-run double by Honnold. The Tigers were able to get one back in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Gracie Morton to cut the lead to 11-1.
Mizzou added another run in the top of the fifth to beat the Tigers in five innings. Sam Ibison scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth. Center fielder Delaney Smith led the Tigers with two of the team three hits.
Mizzou is 3-1 on the season.
The Tigers are now 0-4 on the season and will look to finish the JoAnne Graf Classic strong Sunday morning as they will face No. 24 Mizzou again at 8 a.m. CT.
