MEMPHIS, Tenn. – After playing to a 98-61 win over King University in their exhibition game last Thursday, the Memphis women's basketball team will open the regular season at home on Tuesday night against Xavier. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Tigers, who got an astounding 23 points from freshman Makaiya Brooks in their exhibition game, also welcome newcomers in Tyler Frierson and Emani Jefferson, who transferred to Memphis from Wright State. Jefferson, who chipped in 10 points and led the team with eight rebounds, and Frierson, who added in seven points, both had excellent showings in a Memphis uniform.
Memphis welcomes back three of their top four scorers from last year: Alana Davis, Madison Griggs and Coriah Beck. They also bring back Jamirah Shutes, Lanetta Williams, Jatyjia Jones, Callie Wright and En'Dya Buford.
Along with Brooks, Memphis brings in four fresh faces to the lineup; freshmen Laurren Randolph, Hannah Riddick and Aliyah Green and senior transfer Maya Stovall, who came to Memphis in the middle of last season from DePaul.
Xavier, who went 5-10 overall and 2-8 in Big East play last season, welcomes back two of their top three scorers from a season ago while adding in three Power 5 transfers during the offseason: Virginia Tech guard Shelby Calhoun, Ole Miss guard Taylor Smith and Clemson post player Mikayla Hayes.
This is the first meeting between the Tigers and Musketeers since the 1984-85 season when Memphis cruised to a 102-57 win. The Tigers would go on to finish the season 23-6.
