Tigers Get First Victory of Season With 84-64 Win Over Xavier

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Tigers (1-0) opened the 2021-22 season in fashion with an impressive 84-64 win over Big East opponent Xavier (0-1) in Elma Roane Fieldhouse. This win marks head coach Katrina Merriweather's first win with the University of Memphis.
"I'm so proud of the team," said Merriweather. "We put in a system that they are buying in to. But, I'm just excited and grateful to coach this team."
After opening the game trading points with Xavier, Memphis would go on a 10-0 run that consisted of baskets from Jamirah Shutes and Emani Jefferson. Shutes would cap off the run with a completed and one with just over a minute left in the quarter to give the Tigers a 21-12 lead.
Xavier's Shelby Calhoun would add one last basket for the Musketeers in the last minute of the quarter to cut Memphis' lead to seven heading into the second quarter.
The Musketeers would get within four of the Tigers in the second quarter after back-to-back lay-ups from Calhoun and Nia Clark.
Memphis' offense would explode and push their lead out to as much as 12 after three-pointers from Madison Griggs and Alana Davis and a three-point play from Davis. The Tigers would take their largest lead of the half going into the break off consecutive made free-throws from Davis at 43-30.
The Tiger's pushed their lead out even further to open the third quarter when Shutes, Griggs and Lanetta Williams accounted for a 10-0 run to extend their lead out to 54-38. Memphis' offense continued to shine in the third quarter as they found themselves with a lead as large as 21 after Coriah Beck drove her way in to the lane for an easy lay-up.
Memphis would cruise in the fourth quarter, never letting Xavier get within reaching distance and, eventually, taking the 84-64 win.
Shutes led the team with 15 points while Davis and Jefferson added in 13 points each. Williams led all players with eight rebounds and three blocks tonight while Maya Stovall came off the bench going 3-5 from the field for nine points.
As a team, Memphis shot over 45% from the floor and outrebounded Xavier 47-33.
The Tigers will be back in Elma Roane on Sunday, Nov. 14 to take on SIUE. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tickets for Sunday's game can be purchased on GoTigersGoTix.com.
