Nov 27, 2021 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Tigers put an exclamation point on the end of their week-long trip with the 73-68 overtime win over Penn to cap off the LMU Thanksgiving Classic. Tonight's win marks the team's third win this week and their fourth consecutive win.
Following tonight's win, Memphis moves to 6-1 overall.
A battle from tip-off, Memphis and Penn traded baskets to open the game.
The Tigers and Quakers would go through nine lead changes in the opening 10 minutes of play before Emani Jefferson laid in a bucket to give Memphis the 16-15 lead going into the second quarter.
Penn's offense would get a spark in the second period and putting the Tigers down by as much as 10 after Kayla Padilla drained her fourth three-pointer of the quarter. Baskets from Tyler Frierson, Madison Griggs and Hannah Riddick would cut Memphis' deficit to 33-29 going into the break.
The Quakers kept control of their lead through the third and most of the fourth quarter before the Memphis offense came charging back.
Memphis would get buckets from Coriah Beck, Jatyjia Jones and Alana Davis down the stretch to put the Tigers down one with 16 seconds left in regulation. Emani Jefferson, who was fouled with one second left, went 1-2 from the charity stripe to make it a 60-60 game and send it in to overtime.
The Tigers post duo of Davis and Frierson gave Memphis their first four baskets of overtime and put them up 68-62. Penn would add in back-to-back baskets from Kayla Padilla and Marianna Papazoglou to tie the game again, but the finesse of Maya Stovall got the best of the Quaker defense as she made her way through for an easy left-handed layup to give the Tigers the 70-68 advantage.
Three combined free throws from Jamirah Shutes and Emani Jefferson in the final 12 seconds of the game sealed the deal for the Tigers as they took the 73-68 win.
Shutes (17), Frierson (15), Jefferson (12) and Davis (10) all scored in double figures while Frierson recorded the team's first double-double of the season adding in 12 rebounds.
As a team, Memphis shot just under 36% from the field and outrebounded the Quakers 53-38.
The Tigers will travel one more time this month when they head to Tuscaloosa to face-off against the Crimson Tide of Alabama on Tuesday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
