Nov 27, 2021 | Football
Â
With the victory, the Tigers improved to 6-6 on the season overall and to 3-5 in American Athletic Conference (AAC) play, while the Green Wave end the year 2-10 and 1-7 in league action. The win also secured the Memphis' eighth-straight regular season finishing with a .500 record or better.
Â
True freshman quarterback Seth Henigan was outstanding once again, completing 27-of-42 passes for 336 yards and three touchdowns, while senior tight end Sean Dykes had seven catches for a game-high 89 yards.
Â
Defensively, Memphis forced four Tulane turnovers, giving the Tigers eight takeaways in the last three games. Linebacker JJ Russell had a game-high 10 tackles for Memphis, while defensive back Quindell Johnson had nine stops, an interception and a pass breakup.
Â
Xavier "Zay" Cullens finished the game with six tackles, a fumble recovery and an interception, while Jaylon Allen totaled two stops, 0.5 sacks, 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble.
Â
Running back Asa Martin was also a standout in the victory for the Tigers. Martin totaled 82 total yards of offense to go with a one-yard touchdown run and also forced a fumble on special teams.
Â
After 30 minutes of action, the game went to halftime all tied up at 14-14. In the first half, Henigan connected with Gabriel Rogers on a 13-yard touchdown pass and then with running back Rodrigues Clark from 15-yards out for the score.
Â
The second half started with Memphis taking a 20-14 lead on a pair of David Kemp field goals. His first was from 28 yards, with a career-long 40 yarder coming at the 4:38 mark of the second quarter.
Â
The Green Wave responded with a touchdown late in the third quarter to retake the lead, 21-20, only to see the Tigers score the game's next 13 points. Martin put Memphis in the lead for good on a one-yard touchdown rush, which was then followed by a 25-yard score from Henigan to wide receiver Eddie Lewis, making the score 33-21.
Â
Tulane cut the advantage to 33-28 on a touchdown with 1:57 left, but the rally ended there, as Russell recovered the onside kick attempt for the Tigers, sealing the win.
