LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Tigers picked up their third consecutive win this afternoon when they handed Loyola Marymount the 73-65 loss in the opening game of the LMU Thanksgiving Classic.
Following today's win, Memphis moves to 5-1 overall.
Memphis found themselves in a hole early after the Lions came out with a 6-2 lead through the first two minutes of the game. The Tigers would take their first lead of the game midway through the first quarter when Maya Stovall found her way through the LMU defense for an easy layup.
After four lead changes through the final five minutes of the quarter, Memphis would take a 20-18 lead going into the second frame.
The Memphis offense would catch a spark in the second quarter, going on a 7-0 run to extend their lead out to 31-26. After back-and-forth buckets between the Tigers and Lions, Coriah Beck would lay in Memphis' final basket of the half and give them the 37-32 lead.
The Tigers scoring efforts continued into the third quarter; Alana Davis, Jamirah Shutes, Madison Griggs and Lanetta Williams all scored in the opening three minutes of the second half to give Memphis their largest lead of the day at 13. But LMU's offense would start to chip away at their deficit late in the third quarter, and eventually regain the lead with 6:52 left in regulation.
LMU's Nicole Rodriguez and Ariel Johnson would combine for seven made free-throws to give the Lions their first lead since 1:40 in the first quarter. Memphis would rally for 13 straight points from Shutes, Davis, Emani Jefferson and Tyler Frierson to take a 70-60 lead with 1:48 left in the game. While LMU's offense would attempt a second comeback, Memphis' defense held steady and gave them the 73-65 win and the team's third straight victory.
Jamirah Shutes led the way with 16 points while Emani Jefferson added in 10 points. Coriah Beck came off the bench for nine points and dished out three assists while Tyler Frierson grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
As a team, Memphis shot 54% from the field and scored 52 of their 73 points in the paint.
