Nov 22, 2021 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Tigers center Jalen Duren has been named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week for his efforts in a pair of Tiger wins last week.
Duren averaged 17.5 points, 13.5 rebounds and 5.5 blocks per game in wins over Saint Louis and Western Kentucky last week, and he shot 73.3 percent from the floor (11-15).
The Sharon Hill, Pa., native started the week with 13 points, eight rebounds and six blocked shots Tuesday against Saint Louis, and he dominated with 22 points, 19 rebounds and five blocks Friday against Western Kentucky. Against the Hilltoppers, Duren became the fourth freshman in the nation since 2010-11 to have a 20-point, 19-rebound, five-block game.
Before the season, Duren was named the AAC Preseason Rookie of the Year, earned a spot on the Preseason All-AAC First Team and is on watch lists for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year, the Naismith Trophy and the John R. Wooden Most Outstanding Player Award.
Last week, Memphis forward Emoni Bates won the AAC's first Freshman of the Week award of the year.
No. 9/16 Memphis (4-0) hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Brooklyn, N.Y., for the NIT Season Tip-Off at Barclays Center. The Tigers play RV/RV Virginia Tech Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2 and then either Iowa State or No. 25/RV Xavier Friday night.
