Nov 18, 2021 | Women's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Tigers (14-4-2) secured their spot in the second round of the NCAA Tournament this past Sunday when they shutout LSU 3-0. They will now head to North Carolina where they will face off against the Blue Devils of Duke University on Friday night.
Memphis, who got goals from Jocelyn Alonzo, Aubrey Mister and Bryana Buttar on Sunday's match, are currently on a five-game shutout streak that includes a 2-0 win against UCF, a 1-0 win over Houston and a 0-0 draw with South Florida in the American Athletic Conference Championship – which the Tigers would go on to win after defeating the Bulls 3-0 in penalty kicks.
For the season, three Memphis players have recorded six goals – along with freshman duo Alonzo and Mister, experienced veteran Tanya Boychuk has netted six goals and assisted on four this season. Along with them, Saorla Miller and Grace Stordy, who have both recorded multi-goal games, are among the 11 other Memphis players to have scored goals this season while 12 players have assisted on them.
Elizabeth Moberg continues to shine in goal for the Tigers. After making seven saves in the AAC Championship match, as well as stopping all three PK's she saw, Moberg would make three saves against LSU in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament to record her 10th shutout of the season.
Duke (14-3-1) comes into Friday's match off a 1-0 win over Old Dominion in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. It would take the Blue Devils almost the entire match to get the win; Caitlin Cosme would send Duke into the second round off a free kick with just 16 seconds left in regulation.
For the season, Michelle Cooper leads the way offensively with 10 goals and four assists while Tess Boade has added in seven goals and five assists. Along with Cooper and Boade, 10 other Blue Devils have recorded goals this season.
Ruthie Jones has been the go-to in goal for Duke this season. She has picked up all 14 wins and allowed just nine goals in almost 1,600 minutes of work.
Friday's match is slated for a 5:30 p.m. CT kick-off. Coverage of the match can be found on ESPN+.
