Nov 13, 2021 | Football
True freshman quarterback Seth Henigan led the Tigers (5-5, 2-4 American Athletic Conference) offensively, completing 15-of-26 passes for 233 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Henigan also rushed for a team-best 61 yards on 12 carries against the Pirates (6-4, 4-2 AAC).
Wide receiver Eddie Lewis had three catches for a team-best 93 yards and a score, while tight end Sean Dykes had five catches for 32 yards and a touchdown. Running back Asa Martin had three receptions for 64 yards and TD, while Rodrigues Clark had a 20-yard touchdown run for the Tigers in overtime.
Defensive back Jacobi Francis had a pair of interceptions in the game to go with seven tackles and a career-best 2.5 tackles for loss, while Tyrez Lindsey had a career-high 13 tackles to lead Memphis.
The Tigers had a season-best six sacks on the day, with defensive lineman Wardalis Ducksworth (2.5) and linebacker Jaylon Allen (2) each posting career bests. Defensive linemen Cam'Ron Jackson had his first career sack, while Morris Joseph added a half sack.
Trailing 23-20 with 1:29 left in regulation, Henigan led Memphis down the field brilliantly. With just two seconds remaining, true freshman kicker David Kemp connected from 24-yards out to force the game into overtime, 23-23.
After East Carolina scored on the first possession of overtime, the Tigers answered right back on Clark's 20-yard touchdown run. Memphis went for the win and lined up for the two-point conversion, but Henigan's pass was batted down incomplete, securing the win for ECU, 30-29.
The Memphis Tigers will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 19 when the team heads to Texas to face AAC rival Houston. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. CT and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
