Memphis Goes for Third-Straight Unbeaten Result Saturday against No. 10 SMU
Oct 08, 2021 | Men's Soccer
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Fresh off back-to-back road shutout wins at Temple and UCF last week, the Memphis Tigers look to keep the momentum going Saturday night against No. 10 SMU at the Track and Soccer Complex in Memphis, Tenn.
Saturday's match will be broadcast on ESPN+, and live stats are also available.
Memphis (3-6-1, 2-2-0 American Athletic Conference) blanked Temple 2-0 and preseason favorite UCF 3-0 to move into fourth place in the table, one loss behind second-place SMU and UCF at 3-1-0. In addition to the two-straight wins, the Tigers allowed just one goal, off a penalty kick, in the match prior against No. 8 and AAC-leading Tulsa.
For their efforts last week, Artur De Luca was named the AAC's Defensive Player of the Week, Colin Welsh was the league's Goalkeeper of the Week and Maxi Galizzi was named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll.
"Coming off a challenging but rewarding week with trips to Temple and UCF, we are now excited to be back home to play SMU," Tigers head coach Richard Mulrooney said. "SMU is playing at a high level, and it's a game that we need to make sure we are ready to challenge and compete from the first minute all the way to the last.
"Along with that we are having alumni weekend, so off the field it's going to be a special time being able to spend it with former players who were such a big part of our program and now represent us working in the real world. It's going to be a very special weekend, but as a team we need to make sure our focus is on the match and everything will fall into place."
SMU (6-1-2, 3-1-0 AAC) is the third nationally-ranked team the Tigers have faced this season, along with Tulsa and No. 23 Lipscomb. The Mustangs lost in double-overtime to Tulsa two games ago, and their season has also included a 3-1 win against No. 8 Stanford in the season opener and a 1-1 draw with No. 23 Saint Louis.
After Saturday, Memphis heads to Tampa to face South Florida next Friday, Oct. 15, at 6 p.m. CT.
