Tigers Fall on the Road at Temple, 34-31

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Memphis football team fell on the road at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia to Temple, 34-31.
The Tigers (3-2, 0-1 American Athletic Conference) got on the board first with a lengthy, 17-play, 84-yard drive that ended with a 26-yard field goal from Joe Doyle. On the team's next offensive possession, running back Rodrigues Clark ran it in from six yards out to push the lead to 10-0.
Following a huge stop from the Memphis defense on 4th-and-1, quarterback Seth Henigan capitalized on the turnover, finding wide receiver Javon Ivory in the endzone for a 35-yard touchdown. On the score, The Tigers staked a 17-0 lead over the Owls (3-2, 1-0 AAC).
Temple responded, however, scoring the game's next 17 points to send it to halftime all tied at 17-17.
Memphis battled back to take the lead in the third quarter, when Henigan found tight end Sean Dykes in the back of the endzone for a two-yard score. The touchdown capped an impressive, 11 play, 69-yard drive for the Tigers, making the score 23-17.
The stormed back, scoring the next 17 points of the contest to take a 34-23 lead. Memphis cut the lead to just three with 30 seconds left in the game on a nine-yard Javon Ivory touchdown reception and a Calvin Austin III two-point conversion, 34-31. The ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Owls, however, securing the win for Temple.
Henigan finished the game 24-of-40 for 305 yards and three touchdowns for Memphis, while Austin III had eight receptions for 104 yards. Clark ended the game with 92 rushing yards and one score.
Defensively, defensive back Quindell Johnson had a game and career-high 15 tackles for the Tigers, while linebacker JJ Russell had 14 stops.
The Memphis Tigers will continue AAC play on the road at Tulsa on Saturday, Oct. 9. The game is slated for an 8 p.m. CT kickoff and will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
