Nolley II Up for Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award
Oct 19, 2021 | Men's Basketball
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis Tigers redshirt-junior guard Landers Nolley II has earned a place on the watch list for the 2022 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, announced Tuesday by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Last week, Nolley II was voted to the 2021-22 Preseason All-American Athletic Conference First Team. He was on the Watch List for the 2021 John R. Wooden Award, given to the national player of the year, a season ago.
Nolley II led Memphis in scoring last season at 13.1 points per game and was named to the All-AAC First Team after the campaign, which included being voted the Most Outstanding Player of the 2021 National Invitation Tournament. He also led the Tigers in minutes per game (27.5), 3-point shooting (.387, 65-168) and free throw shooting (.803, 49-61).
The Fairburn, Ga., native had 18 games with 10-plus points and six with 20-or-more a season ago, both of which led the team. He finished 11th in the AAC in scoring, eighth in 3-point percentage and fifth in 3-pointers per game (2.3).
Named after Class of 1980 Hall of Famer and 1959 NCAA Final Four Most Valuable Player Jerry West, the annual honor in its eighth year recognizes the top shooting guards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.
In late January, the watch list of 20 players for the 2022 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award will be narrowed to 10, and then in late February down to five. In March, the five finalists will be presented to Mr. West and the Hall of Fame's selection committee where a winner will be selected.
Previous winners of the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award include Chris Duarte, Oregon (2021), Myles Powell, Seton Hall (2020), RJ Barrett, Duke (2019), Carsen Edwards, Purdue (2018), Malik Monk, Kentucky (2017), Buddy Hield, Oklahoma (2016) and D'Angelo Russell, Ohio State (2015).
