MURRAY, Ky. -- The Memphis Tigers opened their spring slate of matches on a strong note in Murray, Ky., shooting the second-highest aggregate score of the season (4677).
In fact, Memphis shot the same aggregate score (4677) that they did in last year's Withrow Open, where they placed second. The competition is getting tougher, and the Tigers are finding ways to stay in the race for a coveted team selection to NCAA Championships in March.
"The team worked very hard this weekend after a long break and very few days of practice since returning to campus," head coach Dan Hermsmeier said. "Going forward, we will be focusing on endurance and mental preparation leading up to the final matches of the semester."
There were eight teams that shot in the open match.
Freshman Kaylene Castillo shot her highest ever aggregate score (1174) to lead the Memphis team in both guns. She had personal best scores in both smallbore (580) and airgun (594).
Juniors David Crenshaw and Arielle Kimm shot their best aggregate scores of the season (1169 and 1166, respectively).
Sophomore Taylor Gibson continues her stellar season with her fifth-straight match of 1172 aggregate or better.
The ninth-ranked Tigers travel to Lexington, Ky., this weekend to compete against No. 2-ranked Kentucky Saturday at 8 a.m.
