Tigers clinch first AAC victory of the season
CINCINNATI, Ohio – Senior forward Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu recorded her fifth double-double of the season scoring 17 points and grabbing 14 rebounds as Memphis defeated the Cincinnati Bearcats 61-52 in Fifth Third Arena on Wednesday evening. Memphis snapped a five-game losing streak and claimed its first conference victory of the season. The Tigers are now 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the American Athletic Conference.
"I thought our team was really committed to the game plan, we executed really well on offense and we moved the basketball," said Memphis head coach Melissa McFerrin. "Our girls who got to get on the court were effective and it was a really good team win."
Memphis got its momentum going early as the Tigers went on a 9-1 run over two minutes to start the game. Cincinnati answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead and held on to it until early in the second quarter, but a 10-0 run by the Tigers put them back on top. A pair of three-pointers with less than four minutes left in the first half helped propel Memphis to a 34-25 lead. The Tiger held on for the duration of the game allowing the scoring margin to expand as far as 12 points.
Fankam Mendjiadeu was one of three Tigers to score in double digits against the Bearcats. She was accompanied by Alana Davis who had 14 points and seven rebounds and Aerial Wilson with 10 points and seven assists.
Memphis returns to the Elma Roane Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 23 to face Tulsa. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. CT and the game can be seen on ESPN+. For more information on the Memphis women's basketball team, follow the Tigers on social media at @MemphisWBB.
