The American Postpones Cross Country Season
Sep 03, 2020 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
UofM hosted the 2019 AAC Championships at Shelby Farms last November.
IRVING, Texas – The American Athletic Conference announced that it will postpone the competition and conference championships in the sport of men's and women's cross country. Last week, the conference postponed all competition and conference championships in the sports of men's and women's soccer and women's volleyball until the spring of 2021 to align with the NCAA championship season.
Â
The decision was approved by the conference's athletic directors and senior woman administrators following the NCAA Division I Board of Directors' confirmation that NCAA Division I fall championships would move to the spring.
Â
This decision does not impact football, which will remain aligned with the College Football Playoff, scheduled for this fall.
Â
The American will announce the spring regular season and championship formats and schedules after the NCAA Division I Council clarifies the revised playing and practice season and championship formats.
Â
From University of Memphis head coach Kevin Robinson:
"Our team is extremely disappointed to learn that the cross country season for this fall has been postponed. We have had many conversations with our student-athletes regarding this potentially happening, so it does not come as a surprise. It is, though, reassuring at this point to now have some finality. We all wanted to compete desperately, but we agree that the right decisions were made in order to protect the student-athletes and coaches. Now, we move forward and prepare for the indoor season."Â
