Sophomore catcher gains All-American nod for second season
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – For the second consecutive season, Memphis baseball's Hunter Goodman has been named an All-American.
The sophomore catcher from Arlington, Tenn., garnered Second Team All-American honors, announced by Collegiate Baseball on Tuesday. Statistics used to name the teams reflect all games played prior to stoppage of play in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Goodman is the 11th player in program history to earn All-America honors, while becoming the first to be named a Freshman All-American and All-American in a career.
A year after being named a five-time Freshman All-American, Goodman finished the 2020 season third nationally with eight home runs and 31 RBI, and ranked sixth in the country in total bases with 52.
On Mar. 3, he was named the National Player of the Week after posting a career weekend against Western Illinois. In the three-game series, Goodman produced 22 RBI behind four home runs - three of which were grand slams on each day - two doubles, seven runs scored and also stole a base.
He also tallied 11 RBI in the Western Illinois series finale, which set a Memphis and American Athletic Conference single-game record, and the 11 RBI were also an NCAA single-game high throughout the 2020 season.
Posting a .357 batting average to cap the year, the sophomore collected eight multi-hit games, including seven in the last 11 games. Behind the plate, he also recorded a .994 fielding percentage and helped the Memphis pitching staff rank 18th nationally with 11.3 strikeouts-per-nine innings.
Goodman is joined by UCF's Jeff Hakanson (RHP), Tulane's Braden Olthoff (RHP) and ECU's Alec Burleson (UTL) as American Athletic Conference representatives named to All-American teams.
