Tigers fall to third place USF Saturday afternoon

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's basketball fell Saturday afternoon to USF by a score of 68-47. The Tigers fall to 13-14 on the year and 4-10 in American Athletic Conference play.

Through the first four minutes of play, the Tigers trailed USF by one, 7-6, after Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu's second basket of the contest. USF rattled off its first run of the contest, however, building a 10-point lead against Memphis with 2:55 on the clock.

Momentum from the first quarter helped propel the Bulls into a 20-point lead with 7:36 remaining in the half. Memphis responded with a quick 6-0 run, cutting the margin down to 14 after a pull-up jumper by Gazmyne Herndon. USF would go on a 6-0 run of their own, pushing the lead back to 20. A three-pointer by Aerial Wilson with seven seconds on the clock before intermission made it a 39-22 game in favor of the visiting Bulls.

In the third quarter, Memphis strung together a 9-1 run to pull back within 10, 47-37, with 4:39 left in the stanza. Madison Griggs hit her third three-pointer of the contest to cap Memphis' run, putting her season total to a conference-leading 76 three-pointers.

The 10 points proved to be the closest Memphis came to the visiting Bulls are USF responded in a big way. With 5:16 remaining in the game, USF held a 24-point lead over Memphis. The Tigers struggled from the floor, finishing the game with a season-low 22.2 field goal percentage.

Memphis resumes play next Saturday with their final home contest of the season. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. against UCF. The Tigers will celebrate Senior Day and recognize guard Gazmyne Herndon.
