Griggs breaks single-season three-point record in setback to Temple

Gazmyne Herndon paced Memphis with 16 points
PHILADELPHIA – In their lone matchup of the regular season, the University of Memphis women's basketball team suffered a 78-64 setback to Temple Wednesday afternoon at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Pa. The Tigers and Owls competed with nearly 3,000 school-aged students in attendance. Memphis falls to 13-13 on the year and 4-9 in American Athletic Conference play.
On Memphis' first possession of the contest, freshman guard Madison Griggs became the Tigers' single-season three-point record holder with her 71st triple of the year. She broke former Tiger Alex Winchell's record that stood since the 2009-10 season.
Senior guard Gazmyne Herndon finished with a season-high 16 points to pace the Tigers. Griggs ended with 13 points while Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu added another double-double to her season total, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Memphis jumped out to a fast start, scoring the first two baskets of the game. Griggs' triple was a second-chance opportunity after Keke Hunter scooped up the first offensive rebound of the game.
Temple responded to the Tigers' fast start, rattling off a 16-0 run through the heart of the first quarter. Griggs' second basket of the day snapped the Owls run with 3:18 on the clock.
Back-to-back baskets by Herndon helped Memphis close the first quarter by going 3-for-4 from the floor, cutting a 14-point deficit into 10 at the first break of the game.
Trailing by as many as 14 with 4:57 before intermission, Memphis produced an 11-4 run to cut Temple's lead down to five, 36-31, with 1:26 on the clock. Ultimately, the Owls took a nine-point lead into the locker room. Fankam Mendjiadeu and Griggs led Memphis in the second quarter with six points each.
Memphis came within seven just over a minute into the second half, but relinquished another Temple run to find itself trailing by 12 with 4:52 remaining in the quarter.
As the game played out, Memphis was unable to overcome its first quarter deficit. The Tigers outrebounded Temple, 37-31, but struggled to limit the Owls inside. For the contest, Memphis was outscored 48-32 in the paint.

- Madison Griggs became Memphis' all-time single-season three-point leader with her first triple of the game. She now has 73 on the season, which is five three-pointers shy of matching the American Athletic Conference freshman record.
- Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu recorded her team-leading 12th double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She is the conference's leader with seven double-doubles in AAC play.
