Tigers open American Athletic Conference play with win at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Memphis Tigers handed the Tulane Green Wave its first loss of the season, notching an 80-74 victory in the American Athletic Conference opener for both teams. Memphis has now won eight of its last 11 conference openers and holds an 11-game winning streak against Tulane.
The Tigers led 62-58 with 4:15 remaining before going on a 9-0 run over the next 2:39 to push the lead to 13 and take control of the game late.
Memphis (5-3, 1-0 AAC) opened the game on a 24-7 run over the first 12:05 before Tulane (4-1, 0-1) closed the half strong 31-30 Tigers at the half.
Memphis has now won 35 of the last 37 meetings with Tulane and owns a 58-11 advantage all-time.
Glass work
The Tigers owned the glass once again, outrebounding the Green Wave 44-33 and by a 16-7 margin on the offensive glass. It marks the first time since at least before the 2010-11 season that the Tigers have recorded 16-or-more offensive rebounds in three straight games.
D.J. Jeffries had five of his 11 rebounds on the offensive end while DeAndre Williams had four of his six under his own bucket.
DeAndre's debut
Williams made his first appearance in a Memphis Tigers uniform Wednesday night with a solid first impression. The transfer from Evansville scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting while adding six rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal in just 16 minutes of play.
Consistent Quinones
Lester Quinones (20 points) finished one-point shy of his career-high and logged his fifth game in double figures out of his last six appearances. Quinones also recorded his third straight game with at least six rebounds.
