MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis forward Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu recorded 20 points and 14 rebounds in the Tigers' heartbreaking 65-58 loss to No. 23/24 South Florida. It was the senior's fourth consecutive double-double of the season. The Tigers are now 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the American Athletic Conference.
"I thought our girls played their butts off against a team who has beaten some of the top teams in the country," said Memphis head coach Melissa McFerrin. "Our team was locked in and I feel like we accomplished all of our defensive goals."
Seniors Fankam Mendjiadeu and Alana Davis were the only two Tigers to score in double-digits against South Florida. Davis totaled 14 points and two rebounds. Freshman Coriah Beck came off the bench as the third-leading scorer with 9 points.
The Tigers led 20-16 at the conclusion of the first quarter and went back and forth in scoring for the duration of the game. In the third quarter the Tigers came back from a 13-point deficit, but ultimately foul trouble and late game fatigue kept Memphis from securing the win.
"Losing Dulcy and Madison in the final minutes of the game to foul trouble had a great impact on the team," said McFerrin. "It took our experience off the court and we couldn't quite get our execution right after that."
The Tigers didn't go down without a fight. Memphis made 20% of its three-pointers and 80% of its free throws, which were better percentages than USF in both categories.
"We're just a tough team," said Beck. "No matter who we play or what their record is, we're going to give our best."
Memphis returns to action on Saturday, hosting Alabama at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and the game can be seen on ESPN+.
