MEMPHIS — Memphis senior tight end Sean Dykes has been named honorable mention Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Player of the Week for his performance in a 34-33 win over USF last Saturday.
Dykes had seven catches for a career-high 147 yards and two touchdowns as the Tigers improved to 4-2 overall and 3-2 in the American Athletic Conference. He eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards for his career, becoming just the third tight end in Memphis history to surpass the milestone. He is now 40 yards shy of Joey Magnifico's program record for career receiving yards by a tight end.
The Houston, Texas, native has been especially effective in the most important moments for the Tiger offense. Six of his seven receptions against USF converted a third down, including both touchdowns. He ranks No. 1 nationally among tight ends in third-down catches (12) and yards (212) this season. His six touchdown catches are No. 1 in the AAC and tied for second nationally at his position.
His clutch play helped Memphis overcome a 14-point deficit against USF and win its third AAC game this season after trailing in the second half.
"This is a resilient program," Dykes said. "We get taught to fight here and never give up. We all believe in each other. The coaches believe in the players and the players believe in the coaches. We really don't feel like there's a situation we can't come back from."
Memphis is set to play at Navy this Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
