Women's Tennis drops spring opener to Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After dropping the doubles point via a tiebreaker, the University of Memphis women's tennis team was unable to capture enough singles points to complete the comeback, falling to Arkansas 5-2 on Saturday.

"Today was a great dual match between Arkansas and us," head coach Hayden Perez said of the match. "Doubles came down to a tough tiebreaker and in singles, five of the six matches went to three sets, so I am very proud of today's effort. I think we got better today, even in the loss. Go Tigers!"

The duo of Josephine Cao and Lina Hohnhold claimed the first doubles win of the match in a convincing 6-1 win before defeats on courts 1 and 2 set up the early deficit for the Tigers.

Laura Bente started off the singles matches with a straight-set win on court 2, the only match to go two sets. From there, battles across the other five courts waged for three sets.

After falling 6-1 in the first set of her match, Alisha Reayer bounced back with sets of 7-5 and 6-4 to take the second win of the day for Memphis.

Courts 1 and 2 would be the only singles courts to win for Memphis, despite the Tigers taking the first set on five of the courts. Junior Lina Hohnhold went to a third-set tiebreaker, eventually being edged out 8-6 to finish the day.

Memphis stays on the road for its next match, traveling to Oxford, Miss., for a double-header against Ole Miss and UT Martin on Monday. Match time against the Rebels is set for 10 a.m., followed by a 2 p.m. duel with the Skyhawks.
