Volleyball Defeats Arkansas-Pine Bluff Friday

Memphis to face UT Martin in Tiger Brawl championship match Saturday.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis sophomore Meredith Wallace recorded a match-high nine kills to lead the Tigers to a 3-0 sweep over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the 2019 Tiger Brawl Friday night. The two-day tournament at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse is Memphis' home opener.

The win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff was the Tigers' second on the day. Memphis won the match by scores of 25-19, 25-11 and 25-16. Earlier in the tournament, the Tigers defeated Gardner-Webb 3-0. With the two wins, Memphis improved its record to 5-0. Arkansas-Pine Bluff, which fell to UT Martin earlier on Friday, is now 0-5.

First Set
- The set had four ties in the first 14 points.
- With the score knotted at 7-all, Memphis went on a 7-0 spurt for a 14-7 advantage. Sabria Cooper and Meredith Wallace each recorded a kill in the run, but the other five points came off Lions' errors.
- Arkansas-Pine Bluff sliced the Memphis lead to 20-17, before the Tigers regained control.
- Memphis scored its last five points of the set off Arkansas-Pine Bluff miscues.Â
Second Set
- Like the first set, the score was close early and was tied at 6-all.
- The Tigers put together a 10-2 run to grab a 16-8 advantage and never looked back.
- In the spurt, Crescenzo downed two kills, and her service game produced three more points.
- From that point, Memphis cruised to a 25-11 set victory.
Third Set
- Arkansas-Pine Bluff came out on fire and jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the set.
- A Wallace kill got the Tigers on the board in the set at 6-1.
- Memphis battled back and took its first lead of the set at 9-8 on a Crescenzo kill.
- The Tigers steadily built their advantage and led 16-13.
- Memphis then made a final push to the finish line with a 9-3 spurt to close the set and match.
- Sabrina Bianco served three points to increase the lead to 19-13, and Anna Palmer followed with three points off her serve for a 23-14 advantage.
- Crescenzo ended the match on a kill for the 25-16 final.Â
