Sep 22, 2019 | Women's Tennis
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Memphis women's tennis provided a strong showing it its first event of the fall season at the 44th annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
The Tigers turned in five singles wins throughout the weekend, including a pair of ranked victories.
"The Milwaukee Classic was a great event with a very strong field," head coach Hayden Perez said. "The tough competition was really good for the girls, and this was a chance for me to see them compete and learn about their games. We picked up a couple wins against nationally-ranked opponents, and hopefully that's a sign of good things to come this year."
In singles, junior Laura Bente made a run to the main draw's third round after a pair of straight-set wins, including a ranked victory. After a 6-4, 6-4 win against Fleur Eggink of Marquette, Bente collected a 6-2, 6-1 win against Syracuse's 66th-ranked Miranda Ramirez.
Freshman Aran Teixido Garcia advanced to the second round in the main draw following a ranked victory against No. 88 Claire Reifeis of Nebraska in her collegiate debut, before a second-round setback against Oklahoma's No. 23 Oleksandra Korashvili.
Following a first-round setback in the singles main draw, junior Alisha Reayer made a strong run in the singles consolation bracket. After dropping a match to No. 52 Angela Kulikov of USC, Reayer turned in three-set winners against Annalise Klopfer of Navy and Alisa Diercksen of ECU to reach to the quarterfinal round.
Freshman Monique Woog also made her Blue and Gray debut this weekend. The Lakeland, Tenn., native dropped a three-set bout against Maja Pietrowicz of Michigan State in singles before a tough tiebreak setback along side Teixido Garcia in doubles play.
