Tigers cap weekend with fifth consecutive shutout

CONWAY, Ark. – No. 14 Memphis women's soccer captured a 2-0 victory at Central Arkansas on Sunday to close the weekend.
The clean sheet marks the fifth consecutive shutout for the Tigers, who allowed seven shots throughout the evening with just two on target.
The Tigers tallied a goal in the seventh minute of action after senior Stasia Mallin collected her second score of the season. Sophomore Tanya Boychuk then sealed the scoring with her fifth goal of the year in the 51st minute.
"It was a tale of two halves. I thought we came out and pressed in the first few minutes, and then probably didn't make the best of decisions. We got out hustled in the first half," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "We challenged the team to pick it up at halftime, and they did. They responded in a very positive way.
As you see through the stats, shots were 8-5 in the first half, and in the second half it was 19-2. The play really showed that. We were unfortunate to not score a few more goals, but to get a win on the road isn't always the easiest. I'm happy the kids responded and that we were able to get the win."
Mallin started the scoring early after a direct corner kick was tucked inside the far right side of the net just seven minutes into the match. After tying a single-game program record with four assists on Thursday, Mallin continues to pose as a threat on set pieces, with both of her goals this year coming off of direct corner kicks.
"She played in some great balls tonight, and we were unfortunate that we didn't score off of a couple other set pieces from her," Monaghan said of the senior. "She puts them where they need to go. She's extremely dangerous. She's deserving to get that goal and very good at what she does with those."
In the second half, freshman Mya Jones's touch set up a goal for Boychuk as the Tigers claimed a 2-0 lead in the 51st minute.
Defensively, Memphis pitched its fifth straight shutout and sixth overall. In goal, junior Elizabeth Moberg collected her fourth full shutout of the season, stopping both shots the Bears put on goal.
"In the back, Moberg made a couple of big saves in the first half. She deserves probably the most credit because we were kind of quiet in the back throughout the first half. Our passing was a little off and we kind of got down on ourselves," Monaghan added. "The second half was much better and we played more like ourselves. Overall, I've been very pleased with the back line. Today, we saw a little bit of a hiccup in the first half in not being as sharp as we have been, but they fixed it at half."
Memphis will return home to host Iowa State on Friday. Kickoff from the UofM Park Avenue Campus is slated for 7 p.m.
