Shorthanded Tigers claw way to 3-1 win against Ole Miss

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A shorthanded Memphis side clawed their way to a 3-1 victory against Ole Miss Sunday evening on Park Avenue Campus. Playing with 10 players for the final 24 minutes of the match, two goals in the waning seconds of the contest yielded a Memphis win.
"There are certain games you do not forget and you always remember. I think tonight was one of those games. I couldn't be more proud of this group," head coach Brooks Monaghan said. "They had a choice to make. It's kind of like, 'do we look at the glass half empty or half full?' They looked at it half full and kept fighting."
As regulation was winding down, the Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the 89th minute. A service sent in by freshman Mya Jones was misplayed by the Ole Miss defense, giving the lead to Memphis on the own goal.
Forty seconds later, with the Rebels scrambling to equalize, junior Clarissa Larisey sprinted down the pitch and sent a breakaway shot passed the Ole Miss keeper to seal the win.
In the 66th minute a red card was issued to the Tigers as junior goalkeeper Elizabeth Moberg came out of the box to play a loose ball. After it was ruled she was impeding a scoring opportunity as the last defender back, the Tigers found themselves down a player, and senior Rachel Ashworth Shepard stepped in net. With their backs against the wall, the Tigers stood firm.
"I don't think they got rattled. We were playing with a player down, but we really didn't change our system," Monaghan said. "We left Larisey up, and you see what she was able to do."
Ashworth Shepard made her second appearance of the season after preserving the Tigers' shutout against Little Rock in their season opener. Sunday, the senior kept the Rebels off the board as the Memphis defense limited Ole Miss to just two shots in the final 25 minutes of the contest.
Ole Miss scored first with a goal in the 22nd minute after a loose ball found the back of the net. Nine minutes later, Boychuk converted a penalty kick in the 31st minute to draw level at 1-1.
The Tigers outshot the visiting side 19-5, including a 9-2 shot-on-goal advantage. Memphis seeks to carry its early-season momentum on the road this week as the Tigers face Kansas on Thursday night.
