Aug 29, 2019 | Women's Soccer
LAWRENCE, Kan. – A Kansas goal with just over a minute to go gave the No. 18 Jayhawks a 2-1 victory against No. 20/18 Memphis Thursday night at Rock Chalk Park.
The setback negated a terrific night in net by goalkeeper Rachel Ashworth Shepard as the senior tallied five saves and provided a strong presence off the line. Offensively, the Tigers outshot the Jayhawks by an 11-10 margin.
Memphis set the tone early after a shot just 20 seconds into the contest trickled wide of the post.
The Tigers broke through in the ninth minute of the match when Stasia Mallin connected on her first score of the season. Lined up for a corner kick, the senior's strike tucked inside the right side of the goal for the early advantage.
The home side drew even in the 52nd minute after a Memphis handball was called inside the box off a Jayhawk corner. KU's Ceri Holland converted the penalty kick to level the contest at 1-1.
The Tigers found of pair of opportunities late, including a header that struck the crossbar in the 85th minute, before Kansas escaped after a goal scored with 65 seconds remaining in regulation.
Memphis returns to the pitch on Sunday as the Tigers travel to Omaha. Kick off against the Mavericks is set for 12 p.m.
