Video of Boudreaux Recovery Zones in use
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Seeing shipping containers around the Murphy Football Complex has not been particularly noteworthy as of late. With the first stage of the addition to the football complex just completed and the second stage underway, construction equipment and shipping containers have been a common sight. What was not so common, however, was watching over 100 Tigers' football players load into the boxes during a water break Tuesday.
New to the Tigers as of Tuesday are a pair of Boudreaux Recovery Zone boxes to help student-athletes avoid suffering from heat-related stress. Produced by Boudreaux Athletics, the Recovery Zones give an advantage to the Tigers' athletic training staff.
"It's great for us because normally we would have to soak a guy with sponges or submerge them in a tub or take them inside for IVs," said Darrell Turner, Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine. "We've been very fortunate and blessed that Coach Norvell went out and got support for us to have these to take care of our student-athletes this way."
On Tuesday, the temperature inside the boxes before the first water break was 18 degrees. Then, roughly 50 Tigers loaded into each unit with Gatorade, ice pops and water. Inside, core body temps dropped inside the 40-foot long box. Outside, about three minutes into the water break, the temperature guage inside the box was reading at over 40 degrees. After the team returned to practice, the doors were closed and the temps again dropped back down to 18 degrees.
"I definitely noticed a difference for me in the second time when we went in there," defensive lineman O'Bryan Goodson said. "I'm grateful to Coach Norvell for getting these for us."
One of the boxes will move to the Liberty Bowl outside the home locker room for the first two home games of the season.
"Our student-athletes' health is always important and we are always looking for new ways to keep them at the peak of their abilities," Turner said. "We are very fortunate and blessed to have access to this type of support from our football staff."
Other schools utilizing the boxes include Clemson, Florida State, LSU, Tennessee and South Carolina.
