Senior running back named to list honoring the country's best running back.
MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Senior running back Patrick Taylor was named to the Doak Walker Watch List Wednesday. It is the third preseason watch list for Taylor, who has also been named to the Maxwell Award and Allstate Good Works team lists. Tayor is the second Tiger to make one of the preseason watch lists, joining defensive lineman Bryce Huff, who was named to the Bednarik list.
Heading into the 2019 season, Taylor ranks fourth on the Memphis career rushing yards chart with 2,534 yards. He also ranks eighth in carries (458) and fourth in rushing touchdowns (31). Taylor finished 2018 with 208 carries for 1,122 yards and 16 touchdowns, making him just the sixth back in Memphis history to post a 1,000-yard rushing season (DeAngelo Williams, 3 times; Curtis Steele, 2 times; Darrell Henderson, 2 times, Curtis Steele, 1 time; Dave Casinelli, 1 time).
Taylor recorded six of his 10 career 100-yard rushing games last year, including the last four games of the season (at SMU, vs Houston, at UCF, vs Wake Forest). He has scored a rushing touchdown in seven straight games entering 2019. He had six multiple-rushing-touchdown games last year (South Alabama, UConn, Missouri, SMU, and Houston).
A three-time member of the American Athletic Conference all-academic team who has appeared in 39 career games, Taylor received the team's Most Improved Offensive Player Award last year and leads a crew of Memphis running backs that includes mostly underclassmen in 2019. He added 17 catches for 197 yards and two touchdowns last year, including a 75-yard touchdown catch against Mercer in the season opener that tied for the longest pass play of the season.
The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to the nation's top college running back. Darrell Henderson was a finalist for the award last season after leading the nation with 1,840 all-purpose yards and finishing second with 1,446 rushing yards on 158 carries (39th in FBS). DeAngelo Williams was also a finalist for the Doak Walker Award in 2005.
Memphis football reports to fall camp on August 1. Tiger fans can get their first look at the 2019 roster on Saturday, August 10 at FanFest at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium. Season tickets for the six home games this year are on sale now at www.GoTigersGoTix.com.
