Bawden fires 7-under 65 in second round to lead Tigers
BLUFFTON, S.C. – The state of South Carolina is beginning to look like the University of Memphis golf team's second home.
A week after finishing third in the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate at Hilton Head, S.C., the Tigers find themselves in third place at the Colleton River Collegiate in Bluffton, S.C., after shooting a 1-under 575. Michigan State, at 13-under 563, leads the 14-team field, four strokes ahead of Iowa State (567) and 12 strokes better than Memphis.
The UofM's second round was its best. The Tigers fired a 5-under 283 on the 7,180-yard layout at the Colleton River Club's Pete Dye Course.
For the Tigers, Bradley Bawden, medalist at the Wexford Intercollegiate, fired a 7-under 65 in the second round and is tied for ninth at 2-under 142. Isaiah Jackson is tied for 20th after finishing at 1-over 145, Borja Martin is tied for 24th (70-76 for 146), Guillaume Chevalier is tied for 29th (70-77 for 147) and Chase Harris is tied for 54th (79-72 for 151).
Nick Giles, competing as an individual, had a solid opening day putting together rounds of 72 and 71 for 1-under 143.
"Today was really good team golf," said Tiger coach Blake Smart. "We had contributions from everyone and and put ourselves in another final grouping.
"Bradley played a phenomenal afternoon round. In those conditions (cold, steady breeze), and on that course, it was really good."
Individually, Michigan State's Donnie Trosper leads with an 8-under 136, followed by Iowa State's Lachian Barker (137) and Iowa's Alex Schaake (138). Barker tied Bawden with the day's best round, firing a 65 in the second round.
