Tigers Begin Weekend with Win over Cincinnati
Mar 29, 2019 | Women's Tennis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Battling through a gusty Friday afternoon, the UofM women's tennis team claimed a victory over conference foe Cincinnati with a 4-1 decision over the Bearcats.
After taking the doubles point for the second straight match, the Tigers parleyed that momentum into three singles wins to give Memphis the conference win.
"That's something we've talked about, because it's really been a strength of ours recently." Head Coach Hayden Perez said of the doubles win. "We've been playing good doubles, so the message was that this was our last conference opponent until the conference championships, let's finish conference play 3-1."
Finishing first, the team of Alisha Reayer and Laura Bente played their way to a 6-2 win on court 1. Following that victory, the doubles point was clinched by Josephine Cao and Claire Sullivan with a 6-3 triumph on court 2.
On the singles side of the match, Lina Hohnhold took a commanding straight set victory from court 6 to build the Tiger lead. After Cincinnati claimed a point on court 3, Laura Bente took a two set win on court 2.
The day was capped by Katherine Cao, who finished off her opponent on court 5, taking the two set match with a 7-5 second set.
"I give a lot of credit to Cincinnati, we knew that this is a team that doesn't go away. We knew we were going to be in some back-and-forth battles." Perez said. "Coming in, we said that if we were able to mentally stay with it and fight, we'd come out on top."
Memphis continues play this weekend with a 2 p.m. match against South Alabama at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
