Tigers drop match at San Diego
Mar 22, 2019 | Men's Tennis
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Memphis men's tennis dropped a 4-0 decision at No. 36 San Diego Friday afternoon to open the San Diego Spring Classic.
Memphis rallied in doubles play, but fell behind early after the home side clinched the opening point. In singles, the Toreros then collected three wins in singles to seal the match.
San Diego quickly built an advantage in doubles with a 6-0 win on court 2. Despite the deficit, Memphis rallied to force tiebreaks on courts 1 and 3. The comeback bid for the opening point fell shy, as the Toreros took the top spot with a 9-7 tiebreak win.
In singles play, San Diego turned the momentum into straight-set wins at courts 2, 5 and 6.
The Tigers will face a quick turnaround and prep for Day 2 of the San Diego Spring Classic, where Memphis will face a familiar opponent in Wichita State. The two previously met earlier this month, with the Shockers claiming a 4-3 contest.
