Tigers' guard led conference in scoring during regular season; set single-game scoring mark
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – University of Memphis senior guard Jeremiah Martin was named the HoopsHD.com American Athletic Conference Player of the Year Wednesday.
HoopsHD names a traditional first-team (two guards, two forwards, a center), along with a Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Sixth Man of the Year and Coach of the Year. East Carolina's Jayden Gardner was named Rookie of the Year, USF's Laquincy RIdeau received Defensive Player of the Year, Cincinnati's Cane Broome was Sixth Man of the Year and Houston's Kelvin Sampson was Coach of the Year.
Joining Martin on the all-AAC team was G Shizz Alston Jr. of Temple, F Markis McDuffie of Wichita State, F Jayden Gardner and C Tacko Fall of UCF. Martin also won the HoopsHD AAC Player of the Year last season.
Martin enters The American Championship this week at FedExForum as the league's scoring leader at 19.7 points per game. He averaged 23.2 points per game in conference games, a total that also led the league.
A native Memphian, Martin led the Tigers to a fifth-place league finish. Among his accomplishments this season was a record-setting February. He averaged 30.6 points in eight games. No other player in school history has averaged more than 30 points in a month.
During his record-setting month, Martin set a league mark by scoring 43 points in a victory over Tulane. He also scored 41 points – all in the second half – in a game at USF. He became the first Tiger to score 40 or more points twice in a career.
Martin will enter the conference tournament as the No. 11 leading scorer in UofM history. His 1,527 points are only 19 shy of moving into the Top 10 ahead of Chris Douglas-Roberts, who played from 2006 to '08.
