Norvell's contract now runs through 2023.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis has added a year to the contract of head football coach Mike Norvell it was announced by Athletic Director Tom Bowen, Tuesday. The year keeps Norvell's deal at five years and runs through 2023.
"We wanted to show Coach Norvell that we appreciate the work he has put into elevating our football program," Bowen said. "Back-to-back American Athletic Conference championship game appearances, three strong recruiting classes, with more coming on board tomorrow, and helping our program to an unprecedented five straight bowl appearances deserves a show of support. We are proud to be able to put a year back on his deal and keep him at the maximum five years."
Norvell is preparing for his fourth season at the helm of the Memphis program. Under his guidance, Memphis has gone 26-14 and has appeared in two straight AAC championship games. Norvell's offenses have written and rewritten the record books, setting new marks in multiple categories, including total offense, points and single season receiving and rushing touchdowns.
Tiger players have flourished under Norvell's guidance, with Anthony Miller and Darrell Henderson earning NCAA Consensus All-American honors, the first non-specialists to do so in program history. Henderson was also a finalist for the Doak Walker Award and is one of three members of the 2018 roster to earn an NFL Combine Invitation. Henderson and Tony Pollard were named Walter Camp All-Americans and in three seasons, Tigers have earned 23 post-season all-conference honors, including back-to-back AAC Special Teams Player of the Year honors for Pollard (2016, 2017).
The team will begin spring ball on Saturday, March 16. The Tigers' annual spring game, dubbed Friday Night Stripes, will be held on Friday, April 12.
