Shutes earns second league honor this season
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – University of Memphis freshman guard Jamirah Shutes has been named the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Week for her performances this past week against UConn and Houston. This is the second Freshman of the Week honor for Shutes this season.
Â
Shutes led Memphis offensively this week, averaging 15.5 points while pulling down 6.0 rebounds per game. Against Houston on Sunday, Shutes scored a team-high 20 points, marking the fifth time this season she has scored at least 20 points in a game. No other freshman in the league has achieved that feat. Her 20-point performance against Houston marked the 13th time this season she has led the Tigers in scoring.
Â
Also against Houston, Shutes pulled down a career-high eight rebounds. She also finished with four steals, which matches her career-high set twice against Wichita State and Tulane.
Â
Shutes continues to lead all freshmen in scoring with 14.0 points per game. That total ranks her seventh in the league. She continues to climb the all-time Memphis freshman single-season scoring list, moving into seventh place with 351 points scored this year. She also owns the conference's current active free throw streak, having connected on her past 37 attempts dating back to Jan. 30.
Â
Memphis returns to action next Saturday with a road trip at SMU. Tip off against the Mustangs in the only regular season matchup this year is slated for 2 p.m. in Dallas, Texas. For more information on the Memphis women's basketball team, follow the Tigers on social media at @MemphisWBB.
