MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Memphis women's golf team will open its four-tournament regular season schedule Monday at The Icon Invitational at The Woodlands Tournament Course in The Woodlands, Texas.
Memphis is sending the trio of seniors Michaela Fletcher, Madison Thomas and Sydney Colwill to the spring-opening event, against a strong tournament field that includes six top-35 programs. Joining that trio in the lineup will be junior Abby Herrmann and freshman Ana Dawson.
"This is a tough tournament field, but we have enough experience with our seniors to be able to handle that," Head Coach Beth Harrelson said. "And Abby has a lot of tournament experience as well, so this is a good opportunity for us."
Number nine ranked Kent State leads the six top 35 programs in this two-day event. Clemson (No. 18), TCU (No. 20), Purdue (No. 27), Houston (No. 33) and Baylor (No. 35) round out the top 35 teams in the event.
Memphis enters the week ranked number 63, but the Lady Tigers have a top 50 goal with an eye on possible post-season play and a strong showing in the season-opening event could help Memphis on its climb.
"Our goal is to get into the top 50," Harrelson said. "That means that you are in position for NCAA Regionals come post season. We have the right opportunities in front of us for that type of goal."
The remainder of the field will include Kansas State, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, SMU, Southern Miss, Texas A&M, Texas State, Texas Tech and UTSA.
With Houston and SMU in the tournament field, Memphis will get a sneak peek at league opponents in preparation for the conference tournament, scheduled again this year in Palm Coast, Florida, April 14-16.
"It sort of helps, but golf is different in that you are competing against the course and not so much the person you are walking the course with," Fletcher said. "But it does help to get to know other players ahead of time so that when you are at the conference tournament, you are at least more comfortable on the course."
This time around Memphis will be paired with players from Kansas State and Middle Tennessee when the tournament tees off at 8 am, Monday, in a shotgun start. The field will play 36 holes on Monday, then tees off at 8:30 am, Tuesday, in the final round.
