Tigers begin weekend with sweep of UConn
Feb 22, 2019 | Women's Tennis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis women's tennis picked up its second conference victory of the season, sweeping UConn Friday night at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
For the second consecutive match, the Tigers claimed the opening doubles point to establish an early advantage. Memphis then used six win in singles, including five straight-set wins, to seal the league victory.
"I'm proud of the girls today. We made a few lineup changes, and everyone competed hard regardless of what number they played," Head Coach Hayden Perez said. "I thought UConn was a challenge. We had some interesting sets, and our kids prevailed. They are mentally tough right now."
In doubles action, duo Laura Bente and Lina Hohnhold were first off with a 6-3 win. Alisha Reayer and Kayla Klazmer, who made her season debut for the Blue and Gray, clinched the doubles point with a 7-5 victory.
"For three matches in a row now, we have come out with the effort and level we need in doubles," Perez added of the opening point. "Whether the results go our way or not, the fact we are playing at that level right now is what we are looking for, and it's happening."
Memphis registered its first win in singles play when Josephine Cao tallied a straight-set victory. Hohnhold quickly followed suit with a 6-3, 6-2 victory to extend the Tiger lead.
Katherine Cao secured the match for the Tigers behind a 6-1, 7-5 effort. Cao's straight-set victory marked her fifth consecutive singles win.
"I've been trying to not let the points I lose get in my head. I've been letting that go and moving on," Cao said of her streak. "It feels good. I'm starting to like how I'm playing right now."
Playing out the match, Reayer added a straight-set victory on Court 2, while Bente claimed the top spot, 7-5, 6-2. Despite dropping the first set on Court 3, Claire Sullivan fought back to win the second frame and then posted a 10-8 win in the third-set tiebreak to complete the sweep.
The Tigers return to the court Sunday with a meeting against in-state foe Lipscomb. First serve from the Racquet Club of Memphis is set for 10 a.m.
